Good morning, Salem.

The Nez Perce tribe is the subject of a new State Capitol exhibit tracing the tribe’s origins and rich history in eastern Oregon.

The virtual exhibit titled “The Nez Perce in Oregon: Removal and Return” runs through June 30 on the Oregon State Capitol website.

“The Nez Perce, who befriended and helped Lewis and Clark on their journey, had lands taken by treaty and by homesteader encroachment – and finally by war. Nez Perce were subjected to boarding schools, allotment, and other assimilationist efforts. But the people are resilient,” an exhibit announcement said.

The exhibit is presented by the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture and funded by the nonprofit Oregon State Capitol Foundation. The physical exhibit won’t be scheduled in the Capitol Galleria 2025, when construction at the Capitol is expected to be completed.
