Good morning…..

Salem residents joined the national “No Kings” day of defiance on Saturday, joining about 2,000 other communities around the country.

One estimate put 5,000 people on the ground. Sign-carrying demonstrators lined Northeast Center Street.

There were no reports of problems, and Salem was one of several cities in Oregon hosting the anti-administration event. Protests of various sizes were held from Ontario to Florence, from Portland to Ashland. Even Burns put on a show.

In other news, your Salem Reporter team delivered some powerful investigative and enterprise reporting this week. These stories take you deep into local matters in a way no other news organization does.

•Reporter Madeleine Moore investigated the closure of Rudy’s Steakhouse, digging deep into city financial records. The city until the end was a forgiving landlord.

•Reporter Ardeshir Tabrizian tracked the background of the man accused of the mass stabbing in Salem earlier this month. The suspect’s time in Salem started with getting kicked off a bus.

•Managing Editor Rachel Alexander has reported in detail on reading challenges among local students. She prepared a detailed story on how teachers and administrators are working to change that.

Now, for news that might cheer you up. As we do every year, our team connected with graduating seniors from local high schools. The profiles of these students are reason for optimism about the future of the community. This year’s profiles:

In our city government reporting:

•The Salem City Council restores money for a city program.

•Mayor Julie Hoy seeks shift in police forces to downtown.

Neighborhood associations check in what they’ve been doing.

In our community reporting:

•School board puts finishing touches on next year’s budget.
