Inside Out 2, Wicked, among Movies in the Park this summer
Starting next month, bring blankets, snacks and friends to Riverfront Park for outdoor watch parties of family-friendly movies.
The city has released this summer’s Movies in the Park lineup featuring ghosts, emotions and a trip to Oz.
The popular program is fully supported by community sponsors this summer. They stepped up to make sure it would happen as the city prepared to make major cuts this summer, said Kathleen Swarm, city recreation program manager in an email. The new tax levy, which voters approved in May, will allow some wiggle room for unexpected costs.
The summer movies are free to attend, and will be shown at the Gerry Frank Amphitheater, 200 Water St. N.E.
“Arrive early and bring blankets, low back chairs and snacks,” the city recommended in its announcement. No smoking or vaping is allowed, and parking is available near the Riverfront Carousel, at the north end of the park and in downtown Salem’s parking structures.
Times are approximate, and the movies will start around sunset. Each movie will have captioning on a separate screen. Here’s the lineup:
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – Saturday, July 11, 9 p.m.
Returning for the second year at Salem’s Riverfront park, veteran Ghostbusters will join forces with new recruits to save the world from a supernatural ice age. PG-13.
Inside Out 2 – Friday, July 25, 8:45 p.m.
Riley enters high school, and new teenage emotions enter her brain’s command center: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui. PG.
The Wild Robot – Friday, Aug. 8, 8:30 p.m.
A shipwrecked robot befriends the wildlife on an island and learns to communicate with the local wildlife. PG.
Wicked – Friday, Aug. 29, 8 p.m.
Adapted from the beloved Broadway musical and set in the Land of Oz, “Wicked” reveals the tangled backstories of Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. PG.
