Good morning, Salem.

On Monday, the man who set fire to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in downtown Salem on Aug. 31, 2023, was convicted of first-degree arson. Read that story here.

In the year since the fire, repairs at St. Joseph’s have been coming along well, said Father Jeff Meeuwsen, who spoke with Salem Reporter on Wednesday.

St. Joseph Catholic School buildings and the parish center are mostly repaired and in use, and will be seeing some maintenance on doors and the fire suppression sprinkler system, which is functional, he said.

“So now the last building is the church,” he said.

The main sanctuary’s building has been gutted completely, and crews recently blasted a baking soda mixture to clean the tar off of the walls. They’re also working on the roof and insulation, and repairing bricks.

The pipe organ, which once took up half the wall above and behind the worshippers, has been removed and is slowly getting cleaned, and about 8,000 pieces of stained glass have been hauled off to the Midwest for repairs, Meeuwsen said. They’re working with artists to repair the fresco so it can be put back in.

Meeuwsen said he’s been meeting with architects, the project manager and construction each Friday.

“It’s been a long year,” he said. There is not a project completion date set yet.

Also, a brief correction for yesterday’s newsletter, about how to register for the community event about addressing adverse childhood experiences. We identified speaker Jim Seymour as being from the Oregon Center of Community Resilience. Seymour used to be a liaison there, but is currently serving as the director of Community Business & Education Leaders. Salem Reporter apologizes for the error.
