Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Your odds of surviving a heart attack in Salem are a little higher thanks to an effort from the Salem Fire Foundation and local firefighers union to get more AEDs in the hands of first responders.

The two groups purchased 37 AEDs in February and another 32 in September to distribute to emergency medical technicians and paramedics in Salem who volunteered to keep a device in their home or car. The cost was $100,000.

First responders who volunteer get detailed information about cardiac arrest and other medical calls via the app Pulse Point and can respond when off-duty, increasing the odds of an AED arriving quickly during a medical emergency.

Brian Carrera, deputy chief of administrative services for the Salem Fire Department, said none of the distributed devices have been used yet. The AEDs purchased in September are currently rolling out.
