Free meals for kids available through August across Salem

Seven schools in Salem and Keizer are handing out free meals for kids over the summer.

Kids age 1-18, or their parents and guardians, can pick up meals Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Salem-Keizer School District said.

Participating schools are:

  • Auburn Elementary School
  • Chapman Hill Elementary School
  • Chavez Elementary Schools
  • Claggett Creek Middle School
  • Grant Elementary School
  • Hayesville Elementary School
  • Morningside Elementary School

Meals are available for curbside pickup, and each meal pack has two breakfasts and two lunches.

Parents or guardians do not need to have kids with them to pick up meals, and kids do not need to be enrolled in the Salem-Keizer School District to receive food. There is a limit of five meal packs per person, the district said.

Meals will be available through August 30.

The district’s 65 schools provide breakfast and lunch free during the school year for all students and will continue to do so in the 2023-24 school year, spokeswoman Emily Reverman said.

The district is able to offer free meals at all schools through the federal school meal program’s community eligibility provision. Those rules allow schools with a high share of low-income students to offer meals for free to all students.
