Good morning, Salem.
A fundraiser for the families of Marion County farmworkers killed and injured in a crash last week has raised over $40,000 in just one day.
The Oregon Farm Bureau launched the fundraiser Tuesday with a $55,000 goal, saying all funds would go to cover costs for families not covered by workers’ compensation. The farm workers’ employer, Salem-based J. Ruiz Farm Labor Contracting, is a farm bureau member.
Seven farmworkers died and four more were injured May 18 after a truck driver plowed into their van on the shoulder of Interstate 5 between Albany and Salem. Among the dead was Maria Flores Martinez, 60, a Salem resident. Police identified the driver as Lincoln C. Smith, of California. He faces manslaughter and driving under the influence charges.
