Good morning, Salem.

A Salem high school junior took top honors at a state poetry recitation competition over the weekend.

“I am so grateful for this experience,” Keen said in a statement from the Oregon Arts Commission after being named champion. “I loved having my family here to support me. It’s been really amazing.”

The Oregon School for the Deaf routinely sends students to the state poetry recitation competition. Participating students typically translate their poem from English into American Sign Language, then practice recitation in sign.

Keen will represent Oregon at the national Poetry Out Loud competition from April 27-29 in Washington D.C.
