Salem police ask for help identifying men involved in shooting of teenager

The Salem Police Department is asking for the public’s help finding two men involved in a shooting that injured a teenager in February.

The shooting happened Feb. 17 at McKay Park, 2755 Hollywood Dr. N.E., between 6-7:30 p.m., the department said in a statement Monday, March 2.

The victim was shot in the arm after he and a friend were approached at the park and a conflict took place, Salem police previously said on social media. Police did not share any information about the nature of the conflict.

Both of the victims were young teenagers, police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said in an email. He declined to share their exact ages.

An unspecified number of suspects fled the scene before officers arrived at the park, the statement said.

Police are asking for the public to help find two men who are people of interest in the ongoing investigation. Hardy said there is no more specific information about the suspects available.

The department first made the shooting public in a Feb. 20 social media post, but chose to ask for the public’s help after officers determined “that public assistance could move the case forward without jeopardizing it,” Hardy said. He did not elaborate further.

Anyone with information about the shooting and two men of interest can call the Salem police tip line at (503) 588-8477 and reference case number SMP26014094.
