Your Friday evening update on Salem news
Good evening, Salem.
Black Santa PDX, known for his work spreading holiday cheer throughout the Portland area and drawing hundreds of families for photos, will be parking his sleigh in Salem this Saturday, Dec. 20.
Leroy Barber got his start dressing as Santa for a Portland Head Start program, and his work has become a beloved annual tradition for families throughout the region, according to a 2023 profile by OPB.
“Santa Claus is one of the few things that’s all about joy and fun and happiness and dreaming about what you want — whether you get that or not,” Barber told the publication. “And, then if you see a Santa that represents all that — that looks like you — then the magic, in some instances, becomes practical. To me, it just makes the magical practical.”
Black Santa will be at Cherry City Roller Derby’s Madhouse, located at 1335 Madison St. N.E. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. To register for a visit and photos, see his website.
He’s not the only Santa coming to town this week. We highlighted several holiday parties with Santa photo ops in this week’s events guide. For a longer list of options, check out our events calendar.
