Good morning, Salem.

A majority of city councilors last night rebuked federal immigration enforcement efforts in Salem, voting to declare an emergency due to the state of fear and impacts on the daily lives of the city’s immigrant communities.

The 6-3 vote on the declaration came after almost two hours of public testimony. Councilor Vanessa Nordyke originally suggested the declaration and joined Council President Linda Nishioka and Councilors Paul Tigan, Irvin Brown, Mai Vang and Micki Varney in supporting it. Mayor Julie Hoy and Councilors Shane Matthews and Deanna Gwyn voted no.

Unlike other Oregon cities that have adopted similar declarations, Salem didn’t set aside any money for people or businesses impacted by immigration arrests and deportations, though several councilors expressed an interest in doing so at a later date.

Read more from the meeting below. Later today, we’ll bring you a roundup of some of the testimony councilors heard before voting.
