Good evening, Salem.
Gov. Tina Kotek announced this afternoon that Oregon will send $5 million to local food banks so they can feed more Oregonians.
It’s a small fraction of the $140 million per month in food benefits that the federal government usually pays to Oregonians. That includes more than $18 million each month in Marion and Polk counties.
Kotek’s office has said the state can’t afford to backfill that as the ongoing federal government shutdown is delaying benefits. We spoke to Salem residents who rely on SNAP to feed their families about how they’re coping and what the delay will mean for them.
