The professional organization awarded Alexander’s story in competition among small newsrooms in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. She was named a winner in coverage of government and politics.

Alexander was among the founding reporters of Salem Reporter, which launched last September. She previously worked for the Spokesman-Review daily newspaper in Spokane, Wash.

“That Salem Reporter would be judged producing some of the best news work in the Northwest after just a few months is immensely satisfying,” said Les Zaitz, editor and CEO. “Our entire team is devoted to the kind of quality journalism fast disappearing from local media, and it’s always wonderful to have your professional peers recognize your work.”

Besides Zaitz and Alexander, Salem Reporter staff includes Troy Byrnelson, covering local government and business; Aubrey Wieber, covering state politics and government; Saphara Harrell, covering breaking news and local events, and intern Anna Smith of Lane Community College, providing graphics and design work.

Salem Reporter is locally owned and managed.
