Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

In a political case of shutting the barn door after the horses have escaped, Attorney General Dan Rayfield had some strong words for Avelo Airlines in a letter published earlier this week.

Rayfield addressed the July 28 letter to the airline’s CEO, Andrew Levy, in response to concerns he said his office had received over the airline’s plans to fly deportation flights. His letter comes two weeks after the airline announced it would shutter its West Coast operations.

Rayfield said the airline had been an economic boon to Salem and Oregon, but criticized the airline’s decision to fly charter deportation flights for the U.S. government. Avelo officials previously said those flights would leave from Arizona and would not take place in Salem.

“I strongly encourage Avelo to halt all such flights, even outside our state’s borders,” Rayfield wrote. “Such cruelty has no place in Oregon – and no place in the United State of America.”

Rayfield said his office is “committed to protecting Oregon’s laws and values. Should it come to our attention that our laws and values have been breached, we will investigate with the full authority granted to us on behalf of all Oregonians.”

And if you missed our reporting earlier this week: Travel Salem is in talks with a new airline, and officials would like Salem to know that it doesn’t fly deportation flights.
