Old Shari’s in east Salem damaged by early Monday morning fire

A fire damaged a former beloved breakfast, pie and late night spot in east Salem early Monday morning.
The fire at the Shari’s Café & Pies location on Southeast Lancaster Drive was first reported just after 3 a.m. Monday.
Emergency responders initially received mixed information about whether the building or nearby vegetation was on fire, according to a social media post by the Salem Fire Department.
The Salem Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene, dispatch records show.
Salem police at the time confirmed the building and nearby vegetation were both on fire, the fire department said. At least seven fire department vehicles responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported, according to the department’s post.
Firefighters contained most of the fire’s damage to the building’s exterior. There was limited damage inside.

Assistant Salem Fire Chief Brian Carrara did not respond to a voicemail seeking information about property value loss and how many firefighters were on scene.
It took responders four and a half hours to clear the scene, according to city dispatch records.
The fire was still under investigation as of late Monday night, according to the fire department’s statement.
The restaurant has been closed since October 2024, when the company shuttered all of its Oregon locations due to financial issues.
Salem had another Shari’s restaurant on Southeast Commercial Street, which is planned to become a Black Bear Diner location.
