Wildland crew putting out lasting burns from Turner Fire ‘by hand’

Wildland firefighters sifted through 30 acres of scorched farmland southeast of Salem on Thursday and extinguished any burns lingering from the Turner Fire.

The 20-man crew walked the field with hand tools and chainsaws, looking to cut down brush that may still be burning without a flame, according to Salem Assistant Fire Chief Brian Carrara.
