Good evening, Salem.
It began as a grass fire before engulfing the railroad trestle next to the South Block Apartments adjacent to Riverfront Park.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles.
Police haven’t named a suspect or announced any arrests in connection with the fire. If that changes or we get more specific information about the cause, we’ll update you.
The bridge is owned by Portland & Western Railroad, which is making repairs. They hope to have it reopened by Friday, a spokesman said.
