Salem made national headlines today when federal authorities announced their takedown of a locally operated drug trafficking operation.

They described Heriberto Salazar Amaya, 36, as the ringleader of a group linked to the Sinaloa cartel – living in Salem as he organized the flow of deadly drugs into five western U.S. states, spanning from Oregon to New Mexico.

Pam Bondi, the outspoken U.S. Attorney General who took office in February, said at a press conference Tuesday that the drug investigation resulted in the largest seizure of fentanyl in U.S. history.
