Salem man wanted in attempted murder investigation arrested in California

UPDATE Friday, Feb. 13, 10:15 a.m.

Daniel R. Myers, who is a suspect in an attempted murder investigation in Salem, was arrested in southern California around 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, Salem police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said in an email.

Myers is accused of trying to sexually assault a woman and then stabbing her multiple times when she resisted, police previously said. The attack was reported at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, dispatch records show.

His arrest came around eight hours after the Salem Police Department asked the public for help locating Myers. Police said he  fled the area after the woman he is accused of stabbing went to the Keizer Walgreens, where staff called 911.

Salem police put out a press release and information to law enforcement, including a description of Myers’ car and pictures of him.

The department received several calls from law enforcement in Oregon and California saying agencies were hearing from people who spotted Myers’ car, an updated statement from police said.

Detectives determined that Myers fled Oregon and was heading south toward Bakersfield, California, which is around two hours north of Los Angeles.

Police reached out to California Highway Patrol, which then located Myers and took him into custody without incident, according to the statement. Myers is expected to be extradited to Oregon “at a later date” to face multiple criminal charges, including attempted murder, police said.

Salem police are searching for a man they say tried to kill a woman who later sought help for her injuries at the Keizer Walgreens around closing time Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Police are asking for the public’s help to locate Daniel R. Myers, 62, who they identified as the suspect. He is accused of trying to murder the woman after she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her, then holding her captive in his car as he drove for miles around Salem.

The suspect and the woman were making food delivery orders from his car Tuesday when he drove them to a “secluded” area in West Salem, Salem police said in a statement Thursday. He tried to sexually assault the woman, then stabbed her multiple times.

He kept the victim in his car when she tried to leave, the statement said.

The woman was eventually able to convince him to let her go to the Walgreens in Keizer to buy first aid supplies, police said. The store is about four miles north of the Center Street Bridge which connects to West Salem.

When she went into the store, staff called 911. Dispatch records show the call was made at 9:15 p.m. Police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said he didn’t know how long before the call the attack happened.

After police arrived on scene, the woman was taken to Salem Hospital for medical treatment.

The woman is not named in the statement and Salem Reporter does not typically identify victims of sexual assault.

The suspect fled the scene after the woman went into the Walgreens, and police are asking anyone with information about him and where he might be to reach out by calling the police tip line at 503-588-8477. The case number to reference is SMP26012142.

Myers is currently driving a Honda Civic with an Oregon license plate of 241NGP. Police have probable cause to arrest Myers for second-degree attempted murder and other felony crimes, the statement said.

If someone sees Myers, police are advising to not approach him, use caution and call 911, as he is believed to have access to firearms.
