Salem high schoolers plan walkout, urge support for immigrant students

High school students in Salem are asking local leaders to make clear their support for immigrant classmates amid what they described as a growing atmosphere of fear in classrooms across the city.

Ridiculous. Maybe focus on education not activism.
While I don’t know exactly what you’re thinking, I understand the feeling that education should not be distracted by external situations. But that doesn’t seem realistic to me, since students have family and community lives that affect their hearts and minds during the school day. Your comment made me think about how education and activism are not mutually exclusive. I realized that this planned walkout happens at the end of the school day (2pm) so the students aren’t going to miss much class. Also, they are likely learning a great deal (civics, rhetoric, action/consequence linkage, leadership and responsible followership, team-building and cooperative decision-making, graphic communication, etc.). I’m proud of them for standing up for their fellow students whose family lives are making it difficult for them to attend school.
