Woodburn man charged with manslaughter in fatal crash

A Woodburn man is accused of drunken driving in a crash that killed a 27-year-old Salem man in north Marion County.

Prosecutors on Friday charged Wilfrido Giron-Cortes Jr., 33, with second-degree manslaughter, third- and fourth-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

He was the driver of a pickup truck that crashed and rolled Monday, Sept. 29, in the 7200 block of St. Louis Rd. N.E. north of Gervais, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office statement Thursday.

The crash was reported around 7:30 a.m., according to dispatch records.

Passenger Juan Garibo was taken by helicopter to Salem Hospital but did not survive, the sheriff’s office said. Two other passengers were injured. One had a broken neck and the other had a leg injury requiring stitches.

Giron-Cortes had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found multiple open containers of alcohol in the truck.

Giron-Cortes remained lodged in the Marion County Jail as of Friday afternoon.
