Man injured in West Salem house fire Thursday morning

A two-alarm fire at a West Salem home in the wee hours of Thursday morning sent one man to the hospital with burns.

Firefighters responded to the home around 12:30 a.m.

Dispatch records show the fire was reported at 1980 Margarett St. N.W., a few blocks from Myers Elementary School.

Flames in the home were initially reported as seven to eight feet tall, said Assistant Salem Fire Chief Brian Carrara. Propane explosions occurred during the fire, but weren’t the cause, he said. The cause is still under investigation.

One man was home during the fire. He was taken to the hospital with burns, Carrara said. No one else was injured or evacuated from the home.

The roof of the home partially collapsed over the garage around 1:07 a.m., Carrara said. Responders had the fire under control about 1:40 a.m. and remained on scene until about 6:30 a.m. to monitor for flare-ups.

About 15 fire vehicles and 43 firefighters responded, Carrara said. All were from the Salem Fire Department.
