Pride Parade and Block Party

*Saturday, June 7: Salem’s annual Pride Parade and Block Party will bring queer celebration and joy to downtown Salem. This year’s parade will be seven blocks and finish at the block party, held on State Street between Commercial and Front streets. The party will feature dozens of entertainers, food options and arts and crafts activities.

To participate in the parade, meet near the Capitol building on Northeast Waverly Street starting at 11:15 a.m. The parade starts at 12 p.m., lasting less than an hour and the block party will run from 12-5 p.m.

The event is free to attend. Read our preview of it here. The parade will also cause road closures around downtown from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Art show

Friday, June 6: A downtown art gallery is opening a new show Friday night, featuring local artists Robert Bibler and John Van Dreal. The exhibition, “Veils of Light: Between Stillness and Illusion” focuses on slowing down and “looking through the surface into something more,” according to the description online.

The exhibition will show at the Stefani Art Gallery downtown, located at 305 Court St. N.E., and open Friday with a 5-8 p.m. reception. More information about the reception and exhibition is available online and on Facebook.

Those interested in seeing more from Salem’s artistic community can participate in the First Friday Art Walk at 5 p.m. Read more about that in our gallery roundup here.

Garage sale

*Saturday, June 7: Neighborhoods around Salem are participating in a citywide garage sale all day Saturday. Organized by Salem Neighborhood Services and Highland Neighbors, the sale will be a time to get rid of old or unused items, go shopping in the community and meet Salem neighbors.

The community garage sale starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and will include multiple neighborhoods in the Salem area, according to the event description. A flyer about the sale is available here, and the map of all the participating sales has not yet been published on Facebook.

“The Goonies”

Saturday, June 7: Head back to 1985 at Salem Cinema this weekend and catch a screening of “The Goonies.” The classic movie follows two brothers and their friends as they go on an adventure to find long-lost treasure in Astoria. The showing is a celebration of the movie’s 40th anniversary.

Salem Cinema will show the movie at 2:45 p.m. The theatre is located at 1127 Broadway St. N.E. and tickets are available for $10 online.

Queer dance night

*Tuesday, June 10: People interested in learning different Latin dance styles can head to Riverfront Park Tuesday for an evening of dance and music. The event will be hosted by The Outer Realms, a local event organizer and have an instructor teach salsa, bachata and cumbia dancing. The lessons will be a chance for anyone to learn how to lead or follow in the dance styles.

The free night of dancing will go from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Riverfront Park is located at 101 Front St. N.E. More information is available on Facebook.
