UPDATE: NE Swegle Road reopened after police response 

UPDATE : 11 a.m. – The Salem Police Department has reopened Northeast Swegle Road, the agency wrote on X just before 11 a.m. Monday.

A police action Monday morning shut down part of Northeast Swegle Road in Salem’s East Lancaster Neighborhood. 

A nearly half-mile stretch of the road was closed between Northeast 45th Avenue and Northeast Princess Lane.

Police responded to a report that a man was in “emotional distress” at a residence in the area and instructed neighbors to shelter in place, according to Salem Police Department spokeswoman Angela Hedrick.

“Officers trained in crisis negotiation are at the scene,” Hedrick said in an email.

Salem police asked drivers to use alternative routes in a post on X shortly before 9 a.m. Monday morning.

Swegle Elementary School was locked down in response, but the lockdown was lifted before 9 a.m., Salem-Keizer School District spokesman Aaron Harada said.

The school is about 400 feet north of the intersection of Swegle and 45th Avenue.
