OBITUARIES: Verna Maurine (Scott) Fletcher

SALEM – Verna Maurine (Scott) Fletcher passed away on June 26, 2023 in Salem, Oregon, with her loving husband, Scott Fletcher, by her side at Salem Health.  She was born on August 9, 1953, in Fallon, Nevada, the youngest of four children of James DeWitt Scott and Helen Petrine (Sundrud) Scott.

Her mother moved the family to Salem in August of 1956.  Verna attended Englewood Elementary, Parrish Middle, and graduated from North Salem High School. She was a very smart woman, especially noted when computers came into the workplace.  She worked for several years for a magazine/book distributing company, for Taylor Metal Products, and retired from the SEIU Union administration offices.

Verna met the love of her life, Scott Fletcher, while exercising at the Courthouse Athletic Club in South Salem where they found many common areas of interest.  With their marriage, she not only gained a supportive husband, but two stepsons whom she came to feel like her own – Brad Fletcher and Jason Fletcher. The ensuing years brought many life goals, owning a home, camping, and taking vacations to her favorite place – Hawaii!

Verna loved the young people in her life, and they considered her their friend and mentor.  In Salem she practically lived with her nieces when they were young, Renee (Ritts) Grabbe and Michelle (Ritts) Gaudio, the children of her sister, Janet (Scott) Taylor and the step-children of brother-in-law, Duane Taylor.  Later she shared love and laughter with her grandnieces, Whitney and Melissa Gaudio.  She also enjoyed her brother, James (Scott) Harcourt, and sister-in-law Sarahjane Harcourt’s children, Jame (Harcourt) Trudeau with four children of her own, and Alex Harcourt.

Her relatives and friends are sad to learn of her death at the age of 69 as her life was happy and fulfilling until the last few months dealing with the cruelty of lung cancer.   Verna was predeceased by her parents James and Helen Scott, brother Wayne Carl Scott, and several very close friends. Verna was loved and will be missed.  Per her wishes, there will be no services.
