Man who was shot dies after he’s found on sidewalk near state fairgrounds, police say

Police are seeking the public’s help as they investigate the death of a man found on a Northeast Salem sidewalk on Saturday, July 1, with a gunshot wound.

The Salem Police Department said Steven M. Hill, 34, was found by passersby on a sidewalk at the intersection of Northeast Silverton Road and 17th Street, near the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Police were dispatched about 7 p.m. Saturday.

“Passersby and officers assisted in providing medical aid to the victim; however, paramedics pronounced him deceased a short time later,” Salem police said in a statement on Saturday, July 2.

In a subsequent email, agency spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said, “There is no indication the incident occurred much outside the timespan of the call to the dispatch center.”

Police closed Silverton Road for several hours to investigate and are asking anyone with information to call the Police Tips Line at 503-588-8477.

CORRECTION: The victim was found on Saturday, July 1. A previous version said it was Friday, July 1. Salem Reporter apologizes for the error.
