Man in custody walks away from prison work crew at Salem park

A man in custody walked away from a state Department of Corrections work crew at a southeast Salem Park late Tuesday morning, according to the agency.

Nathan Joyce, 37, was last seen walking away from Cascade Gateway Park at 11:09 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Joyce weighs 180 pounds and is 6-foot-2 with blue eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue sweatshirt, a gray face covering and an orange vest, the department said in a news release.

People should not approach Joyce, the release said.

Joyce entered corrections department custody on May 3, 2022. His earliest release date is March 2, 2024.

A jury in Lane County found Joyce guilty on April 29, 2022 of third-degree robbery and giving false information to a police officer. He pleaded no contest on July 6, 2022 to assaulting a public safety officer in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Joyce was in custody at Santiam Correctional Institution, a minimum-security prison in Salem that houses around 440 adults in custody within four years of being released. He was working on an Oregon Department of Transportation work crew, according to the release.

The corrections department said anyone with information about him should contact the Oregon State Police at 1-800-452-7888, the non-emergency number of their local police department, or the corrections department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit at 503-569-0734.
