A public dispute led to a shootout near the Northgate neighborhood Monday night that left one man dead, another man injured and a teenage girl wounded in a nearby home by a stray bullet, the Salem Police Department said in a news release Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Authorities have not identified anyone involved in the gunfight or said whether any criminal charges will be pursued.
Salem police responded around 8:50 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13. to reports of gunfire in the area of Northeast Arbon Drive and Northeast Vallejo Street. The area is about a half-mile from Washington Elementary School and a mile from Northgate Park.
Officers arrived to find two men with gunshot wounds. One man, 27, died. The second man, 30, was taken to Salem Hospital where he remained as of Tuesday afternoon, the news release said.
A teenage girl was also found with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
“Officers learned several men were gathered in the street when a dispute erupted, and gunfire was exchanged,” according to the police statement.
Stray bullets from the shootout struck a nearby home and one round entered the home, striking the teen.
The department said it would not release any additional information about the incident. It asked anyone with information to call the Salem Police Tips Line at 503-588-8477.
