Police close Southeast Commercial as witnesses report a shooting

Salem police closed southbound Commercial Street at Kuebler Boulevard Monday morning for what they described in their announcement as “police activity.” Witnesses were reporting on social media accounts that a shooting occurred.

A body was on the ground and covered with a tarp in the parking lot of NAPA Auto Parts at 5105 Commercial St. S.E., on the southwest corner of Commercial and Kuebler.

An estimated 15 police vehicles were on the scene.

Commercial Street also was closed northbound at Southeast Barnes Avenue, just north of the Walmart shopping complex, police said.

At least 17 shots can be heard in a video recorded about a half-mile from the scene on Southeast Nicole Court and posted to Facebook at 9:18 a.m. Monday.
