Saturday is last chance for Salem’s leaf haul

Salemites can bring their fall leaves to a city landfill for free on Dec. 10, the final day of Salem’s fall leaf haul.

The Brown’s Island Demolition Landfill, 2895 Faragate St. S., will accept leaves Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the city’s website.

City code requires Salemites to remove all leaves that fall on their property within the right-of-way behind the curb. Leaves in the street are the city’s responsibility.

“Please don’t rake or blow your leaves into the street. It’s prohibited and can cause serious issues during heavy rain,” the city’s website says.

Salemites can also bring grass clippings and tree limbs to the leaf haul.

Leaves are composted and used in city and county parks, said Trevor Smith, the city’s parks spokesman.

People can also compost leaves at home or put them in green yard debris bins.
