Man suffers life-threatening injury in shooting Thursday night

A man suffered a life-threatening injury in a shooting Thursday night at a northeast Salem encampment, police say.

At 11:10 p.m. Thursday, Salem police received a report of a person with a gunshot wound in the area of Northeast Bill Frey Drive and Portland Road, the department wrote in a statement Friday afternoon.

Officers arrived and found a man with a gunshot wound at an encampment in the distance.

“The officers provided immediate medical aid and carried him out to a location where paramedics provided assistance,” according to the statement.

Paramedics transported the man to Salem Hospital, where he was receiving treatment as of Friday afternoon.

The department’s statement did not say whether anyone had been arrested or was a suspect in the shooting.

Salem police learned a dispute had occurred between people at the encampment before the shooting. The department said it wouldn’t release additional information about the incident.
