A woman found dead in a vehicle Thursday morning was killed by gunfire, according to Salem police.
Around 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Salem officers were called to a report of a welfare check in the 3300 block of Northeast Portland Road, the Salem Police Department said in a Thursday evening news release.
Officers found a deceased woman slumped over in a vehicle.
Detectives with the Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit were called to the scene to investigate the death. Their early investigation showed the woman “died as a result of gun violence,” the release said.
Salem police in the release did not identify the woman or clarify if any arrests had been made related her death.
“Our detectives are working diligently on this case. At this time there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public,” said acting-in-capacity Deputy Chief Michael Bennett in the release.
Salem police said they had no additional information to release.
