Woman critically injured in West Salem house fire

One woman was critically injured during a house fire that broke out in a West Salem neighborhood in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Salem Fire Department spokesman Gabe Benmoussa said the victim was unconscious in the basement when crews arrived on scene around 1 a.m.

Benmoussa said she has been transferred to the Legacy Oregon Burn Center for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Benmoussa said a dog’s barking alerted the other residents to the smoke and all five were able to make it out safely.

He said there were no functioning smoke detectors in the house.

The deputy fire chief said it’s important for residents to have working smoke detectors, so they can act as an early warning for fires.
