High heat continues in Salem today as temperatures are expected to once again creep into the mid-90s.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Tuesday morning because of above-normal temperatures, with a high of 96 degrees expected. That would break the record high of 93 for the day set on June 12, 2002. The advisory ends at 9 p.m. Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the high in Salem was 96 and the low Wednesday morning was 66.
To stay cool on excessively-hot days, the Oregon Health Authority suggests people to stay in air-conditioned areas, wear loose-fitting clothing, and avoid hot foods, alcohol and sugary drinks.
OHA also advises parents or pet-owners to never leave infants, children or pets in parked car.
According to the weather service, a parked car sitting 90-plus degree heat with no air conditioning can see temperatures can spike by nearly 20 degrees in an hour, reaching heats of up to 124 degrees in the hottest parts of the day.
The heat is expected to abate later this week, with averages in the low 80s.
On Tuesday National Weather Service Meteorologist Laurel McCoy said Wednesday’s temperature might break the record high for June 12 – 93 degrees.
