Salem temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-90s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the region because of above-normal temperatures and the possibility of heat-related illnesses.
Laurel McCoy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, said tomorrow’s expected temperature might break the record high for June 12.
“We’re flirting with records right now just because it’s so early in the season,” McCoy said.
June 12 has record high of 93 degrees. Tomorrow’s temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees.
“It is pretty unusual for early June but we are starting to get in that season,” she said.
Salem hottest day in June was a 105 degree scorcher in 1992, according to the weather service.
To beat the heat, McCoy suggested people drink lots of water and find places to stay cool, like in shopping malls or libraries.
The weather service also recommends staying out of the sunshine and checking up on relatives or neighbors.
Tuesday night temperatures are forecasted in the 60s.
“It’s going to be pretty warm for people going to bed tonight,” McCoy said.
The heat should start to abate on Wednesday night as marine air blows through the valley. Friday’s temperature is expected to be in the high 70s.
