Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening from your team at Salem Reporter.

President Joe Biden is dropping in on Oregon later this week, but he’s apparently going to stay Portland centric. He arrives in Portland for a “grass roots” events with Democrats on Friday and then on Saturday will try to boost the election chances of Tina Kotek, Democratic nominee for governor.

The governor’s race is seen now as a contest between Kotek and Republican Christine Drazan. Polls have Drazan ahead and show nonaffiliated Betty Johnson’s support at about 20% among voters.

Pollsters also are saying Congressional races in Oregon once thought safely leaning towards Democrats are now closer to toss-ups. Republicans nationwide are working to take control of the U.S. House.

That would be good news from U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz, the state’s lone Republican in Congress. Though a freshman, Bentz has close ties to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has his eyes on the speakership. That could help if the Republicans succeed and committee chairmanships go into play.

So, at all levels, it’s going to be a lot of politics at every turn for the next month.

Meantime here’s a bit of today’s other news. Catch all Salem Reporter’s stories anytime on our website.
