Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening from your team at Salem Reporter.
In early September, Salem police arrested a homeless man they believed was having a mental health crisis in downtown Salem outside the Elsinore Theatre. A bystander captured video of the arrest, which showed multiple officers restraining the man.
Reporter Ardeshir Tabrizian has spent weeks looking into the arrest, department policies on handling people in crisis, and how the man’s story illustrates a lack of community resources available to help people struggling with mental illnesses. Look for our special report publishing Friday morning.
In the meantime, here’s some of today’s news. Catch all Salem Reporter’s stories anytime on our website.
