Good evening….

The historic Criterion School in Salem is getting some extra attention these days.

The schoolhouse is in retirement at the Oregon State Fair and Exposition Center

Recently, the one-room school was added to the National Schoolhouse Register.

The school opened in 1912 outside of Maupin, in Wasco County, and ran for 13 years. It closed after a new state highway made it easier to haul students into Maupin.

In the following years, it served as a community center, then a Grange Hall and finally put to farming work, used for storing hay.

In 1975, state officials searched Oregon for a one-room schoolhouse to move to the fairgrounds for part of the 1976 Bicentennial celebration at the state fair. Out of 50 considered, Criterion won the nod.

Oregon National Guard crews cut the school in half and hauled it 200 miles to Salem, where it was put back together and restored in time for that year’s fair.

The national recognition came through the nomination of the Oregon Retired Educators Association.

And the little school got more good news recently.

The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund donated $5,000 to help cover the high costs of milling period-accurate siding. The educators association is teaming up with the Historic Preservation and Restoration Program at Clatsop Community College to plan the siding project and conduct workshops this spring.

And here’s what else is news…..
