Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening….
The death of a beloved Salem cyclist in a collision recently leaves many questions unanswered.
Marganne Allen, 53, a state government executive, died after the accident as she rode down Southeast High Street on Tuesday, March 28.
The Salem Police Department didn’t release details until a day later. And then, oddly, the agency put out a second press release on the afternoon of Friday, March 31. In this, the agency disclosed that the driver was an on-duty agent of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
The agency won’t explain why it waited three days after the collision to share that fact. Any more information now will come from the Keizer Police Department, which has taken over the investigation because of Salem police ties to the federal drug agency.
We know people in the community have questions. Did the vehicle have a dash cam? Was the driver distracted and on the phone? Will the driver be treated special because he’s in law enforcement?
At Salem Reporter, we’ll continue to press for information but Keizer officials say they will proceed carefully. What they won’t say is whether the driver was cited. As we learn more, we’ll report back to you.
