It’s looking increasingly likely the federal government will shut down at midnight Sunday, when Congressional funding for most federal work expires.
That means many federal workers will go without a paycheck. About 1,500 Salemites, or 2% of the city’s workforce, are employed by the federal government.

A Town Hall open and free to the public will explore issues around Salem’s new wage tax. Salem Reporter is hosting the event Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Elsinore Theatre at 6 p.m.. Voters will get a chance to decide whether the tax stays in November.
