Good evening, Salem.
Public safety and cleanliness will be the topic of a Salem City Council work session this evening.
The council will meet in Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library’s main branch at 585 Liberty St. S.E. at 6 p.m. to discuss the city’s progress on addressing concerns business owners have raised about petty crime, theft and cleanliness downtown and in northeast Salem.
Councilors will consider feedback from residents, local business owners and homeless service providers and advocates.
The discussion comes after Mayor Julie Hoy announced private donors had agreed to fund the return of the police bike patrol. Other proposals on the table to help mitigate safety and livability issues include expanding cleaning services, having the city’s Homeless Services Team to provide assistance seven days a week, and setting up a pilot program pairing emergency workers with mental health specialists.
We’ll have more on their discussions tomorrow.
