Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Last week, dozens of volunteers helped beautify and renovate a safe landing place for refugees coming to Salem.

The Taylor House, owned by Salem for Refugees, houses refugee families from around the world as they search for an apartment. It has housed eight families since last year and was in need of upgrades, said volunteer Karen Utley.

Utley is part of a local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which encouraged its members to volunteer last week in honor of the Nationwide Day of Service. Over 70 people of all ages came to work at The Taylor House, Utley said.

They laid concrete and put up a new fence, painted the entire home and cleaned the yard of boulders, bricks, old yard furniture and did intensive landscaping and weeding. They also laid playground bark in the yard for the next kids that will move in.
