Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news
Good evening, Salem.
The assassination of prominent conservative political activist Charlie Kirk today drew sharp bipartisan condemnation from Oregon politicians.
Kirk, 31, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University Wednesday. The Salt Lake Tribune reported he was answering a question referencing mass shootings.
President Donald Trump ordered flags flown at half-staff through Sunday evening in Kirk’s honor. Few details have been released about the investigation, and police released a person of interest in the shooting after interrogation, the New York Times reported.
“Enough. This madness must stop here, and it must stop now,” said Oregon Rep. Jeffrey Helfrich (R-Hood River). “First, they tried to kill a former president. Then they murdered sitting legislators in Minnesota. Now a loving father and husband is dead for wanting to start a conversation with college kids. He leaves behind a grieving wife and two children who no longer have a husband and father — all because a coward thought bullets were a way to win that conversation.”
U.S. Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrats both condemned the shooting.
“The attack on Charlie Kirk is inexcusable. Violence has absolutely no place in our democracy. America is better than this,” Gov. Tina Kotek posted on social media.
“The violent attack against Charlie Kirk is horrifying and disgusting. There is no place for political violence in our country,” said U.S. Rep. Andrea Salinas, a Democrat whose district includes Salem.
