Good evening, Salem.

Thousands of families in Salem were able to shop for groceries using their Oregon Trail Cards today after the state recharged benefit cards in the hours after a federal court order required the Trump administration to restore payments withheld amid the government shutdown.

One local mom described cautious relief, and a race to buy groceries, after going weeks thinking November’s SNAP funds may not come at all.
Oregon’s distribution of the federal funds came before the Trump administration, on Friday, asked the Supreme Court to halt the federal order requiring they pay out November’s benefits.

Ahead of the original court order, Marion Polk Food Share saw a surge of donations, with neighbors coming together to keep the community fed. We’ve kept an updated list of businesses and organizations accepting donations, where anyone can walk in and get something to eat.

Salem Reporter plans to continue its coverage of food insecurity in the community, as the government shutdown continues and December’s payment remains uncertain. Read more about today’s distribution in the story below.
