Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Salem Reporter logo

Good evening, Salem.

Getting students to come to school remains a vexing problem in Oregon. Students can’t learn to read if they’re not in class. State and local attendance rates plummeted during Covid and to date remain below 2019 levels, despite improvements in recent years.

On Thursday, new state data will give a fresh look at how our students are doing with getting to class. We’ll parse Salem and Keizer schools for outliers and talk to principals about what’s going well and where challenges remain.

The data this year also includes mobility rates – how many students switch schools mid-year, or enroll late. That’s another factor that’s little discussed outside school walls but can significantly affect academic achievement.

Our team remains determined, through our own reporting and our partner newsrooms, to shine a light on what’s keeping so many Oregon students from reading and doing math at grade level. That includes these state data points, as well as stories about local efforts.

Have suggestions for what we should focus on or questions about attendance you’d like our reporting to answer? Send them to [email protected].
