Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Oregonians got some better news today about the state’s financial future. Economists now say the budget outlook for the cycle ending in 2027 is rosier.

There’s still a likely budget deficit, but its size is $63 million – not the previously forecast $373 million. That’s thanks in part to more corporate tax payments. Much remains uncertain, and those numbers will continue to shift, but the news will take some financial pressure off lawmakers for the immediate future.

What it won’t change, however, are plans to again cut school budgets in the spring. Salem-Keizer School District leaders announced a $25 million cut target earlier this fall, saying it’s needed to keep up with the rapidly rising costs of employee wages, benefits and pension obligations.

One reason for the district’s ongoing financial woes is outlined below in a story from our colleagues at The Oregonian: Oregon systematically underfunds school districts with a high share of students in poverty.
