Good evening, Salem.

Thousands of people attended “community conversations” at local high schools over the past three weeks to give feedback on how the Salem-Keizer School District should approach its forecasted budget deficit.

We heard from several of you who left the meetings with more questions about why the school district is in the position it’s in, and what’s going on with union negotiations.

School budgets are a hot topic this fall, underpinning the labor dispute that has led to a two-week teacher strike in Portland. In Salem, negotiations with both teachers and education support workers are at a standstill and headed to state mediation.

District leaders have said they plan to announce a first round of cuts after Thanksgiving. We’re planning coverage ahead of that announcement explaining what’s going on with the district’s budget, why it’s happening now and what it means for kids and educators in local schools.
