Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news
Good evening, Salem.
The U.S. House of Representatives is poised to vote this evening on a measure to fund the federal government. If it passes and is signed by President Donald Trump, it would end the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
That will mean paychecks for federal workers who have been furloughed or working without pay for weeks. It will also provide stable funding for federal food benefits for a year.
In lighter news, today is the 55th anniversary of Exploding Whale Day. For the uninitiated, this is a real event that occurred in Florence in 1970, when a team of state highway engineers decided dynamite was the best way to dispose of a whale carcass that had washed ashore. (It was not.)
It’s not strictly a Salem event, but we thought our readers might appreciate a bit of whimsy in these challenging times. We dug through newspaper archives to gather Salem newspapers’ original coverage of the spectacle from the beach in 1970. Find that below.
