Good evening, Salem.

A somber gathering of cyclists will take to Salem’s streets Wednesday evening to raise awareness of those on bikes killed and injured on roadways.

The annual Ride of Silence takes place around the nation. Salem’s event is an 8-mile ride starting at 7 p.m. at the state’s Red Parking Lot, 1128 Marion St. N.E. Prior to the ride, at 6:30 p.m., attendees will share stories.

The event is organized by the Salem Bicycle Club and Salem Bike Vision, a group advocating for more bike-friendly roadways and pathways in Salem.

In addition to a memorial, the ride is “an opportunity to demonstrate to the community in a visible way the costs of unsafe roadways,” said Tim Newman, president of the Salem Bicycle Club, in a statement.

“Americans should not have to risk severe injury or death simply because they choose to ride a bicycle. The National Ride of Silence calls attention to the need to design safer streets for all road users, especially for those who bike and walk,” said Ian Davidson, co-founder of Salem Bike Vision and a Cherriots board member, in a statement. “While the Ride of Silence will be audibly quiet, we hope the message to the community is heard loud and clear.”

More information about the ride is on its event page.
