Good evening, Salem.

Salem teens are getting a chance to talk to lawmakers and advocate for issues important to them, thanks to a recent grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Salem, Marion and Polk Counties.

The organization recently received about $12,500 from the Oregon Capitol Foundation to support its Training Teens for Tomorrow program. It’s the second year the program has received a grant, spokeswoman Kari Roberts said.

Four teens visited the Capitol in February to tell Salem-area lawmakers about programs that matter to their lives, like paid employment through the Oregon Conservation Corps, free meals and literacy mentoring.

Another group of 13 teens will visit later this month to learn about the legislative process. In total, about 70 teens in the Club participate during the year, Roberts said.

“Through these visits and the teen summits, our teens are finding their voice and can discuss the issues that are important to them,” she said in an email.
